Sure, one of the dining halls might have an option for you. Or you could scour the salad bar for something edible. But where are the best places to eat vegan in Hyde Park? And what should you get there?
Whether you’re in a fully committed relationship with vegetables or you just want the warm fuzzy feelings that go with knowing you had a vegan meal, here is your guide to being vegan at UChicago.
Mickey’s Retro Grill
Mickey’s is finally catering to vegans and what more could you really ask for! You can add avocado, cilantro, grilled onions, and more to your burger! Whether you’re having a craving or you’re just really hungry, having an impossible burger in the neighborhood is a game changer.
Medici
No Hyde Park visit is complete without a trip to the med! You can start with the Hummus or the veggie chili! They also added an Impossible burger to the menu for the fall, but I’m a big fan of the vegetable skewers. Just don’t leave without a coffee!
The Nile
Most mediterranean restaurants will serve falafel by the pound but the Maklouba without yogurt and the Tagin are awesome alternatives at this 55th street staple.
Plein Air
For breakfast, Plein Air has phenomenal pastries, but their oatmeal is both filling and affordable! As far as filling vegan lunches go, you can’t go wrong with their grain bowl. I get it twice a week because there is nothing like it on campus! They also just added oat milk as an alternative option and I am fulfilled.
Shinju Sushi
Avocado maki has become the comfort food of my dreams, but they have tons of alternative veggie rolls. Shinju’s mango bubble tea is dairy free and delicious.
Aloha Poke
Want all your protein in one meal? Aloha offers filling bowls with marinated tofu, avocado, and edamame which makes it so easy and delicious to get all your amino acids for the day!
Rajun Cajun
This Indian-Soul Food fusion is absolutely delicious and has so many vegan options! Most are spicy, but the chana masala is the perfect rainy day food. Don’t stop by without getting the mango juice!
Hyde Park Taco Station
The taco station’s vegan fuel tacos are so filling and absolutely delicious! Get them with a side of guac because sometimes they have a lot of potato.
Sanctuary Cafe
In University Church, Sanctuary Cafe always has amazing vegan desserts. It will completely satisfy your sweet tooth with the coziest environment perfect for those Chicago winters!
Native Foods
Of course, no vegan guide to hyde park is complete without Native Foods! This completely vegan restaurant brings so many great options from incredible dupes to amazing bowls. Their mac and cheese always makes me so happy and I’d really recommend their cupcakes!
